John Tracton Dennis was educated at Cheltenham College and entered the Royal Dublin Fusiliers from the Gloucestershire Royal Engineer Volunteers on 4 November 1899. He was wounded in action at Harts Hill on 24 February 1900 and subsequently died of enteric at Aliwal North on 2 May 1900. His name is inscribed on the Eleanor Cross War Memorial at Cheltenham College. Additionally entiled to the Transvaal clasp.
