Robert Wolfgang Romer joined the H.A.C. in August 1914, and proceeded with 'B' Battery to Egypt and Aden. He returned as Sergeant in May 1916, and was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery, August 1916. In France he was wounded and gassed at Armentieres in July 1917, and after a period of convalescence in Manchester, returned to France in November 1917, where he was appointed Instructor in French at the 2nd Army School at St. Omer. He was specially mentioned in despatches and awarded the O.B.E. (Military) London Gazette, 3 June, 1919.
