For 30 years, Peter acted as Managing Director of A.H. Baldwin, the coin-dealing business founded by his great-grandfather. As MD he catalogued many of the most famous collections of British and British Colonial coins. These catalogues remain classics of their time, constantly referred to by collectors and students.

Away from Baldwin's, Peter was instrumental in the formation of the British Numismatic Trade Association in January 1973, serving as its first secretary and subsequently as chairman for 13 years. He remains an honorary life member. A member of the British Numismatic Society since 1954, he was elected vice-president in November 1991, the only member of the trade so honoured.
